2023 Was Bigger Than You Thought
People will remember 2023 for different reasons. Some as a “winter”, others as “the year of ordinals” and others as the year that Bitcoin became institutionalized, with all of the ETF speculation.
Whilst true, we believe there were much more significant undercurrents.
The 2022-2023 Bitcoin winter has been the longest of all. The price declined for over 490 days: the longest period in history. But in that winder, seeds were planted, which are beginning to show signs of life.
Some of these seeds include what’s happened in the following three countries:
Oman
El Salvador
The Kingdom of Bhutan
What’s special about them?
They all began to publicly acknowledge their nations were not only mining Bitcoin, but investing billions of dollars into building mining infrastructure.
This is perhaps one of the largest developments in Bitcoin. It is integrating itself into the energy system of the world, and energy is what powers everything. It makes everything else possible.
This is why we chose to dedicate this year’s edition to Energy.
Six Timeless Insights
1. UberMoney
‘’Most people think that Bitcoin’s greatest contribution will be to lift the masses up and “help the weak.
While that will likely occur–and not for the reasons you think it will–it’s my (unpopular) belief that the more important contribution and impact to mankind will be that Bitcoin makes the strongest stronger, the best better, and the most powerful, more powerful.''
Most people have been brainwashed to believe “power is bad” and that Bitcoin is somehow power agnostic. This couldn't be further from the truth.
Bitcoin is a framework for excellence, which by definition rewards strength. “May the best man win” becomes not just the exception, but the rule. Bitcoin will empower the strongest in society, and expose those who are in power today, for being the weak, parasitic individuals they are.
2. Humanity At A CrossRoad
Marty Bent reminds us that ESG is a scam…
While this shouldn’t be a controversial opinion to many of you reading, Marty believes we should be approaching the ESG battle in a different way.
Instead of bending the knee and engaging in a debate surrounding Bitcoin’s energy usage on their grounds (ie; is it renewable and green, or dirty), we should instead change the framing. Using MORE energy is a good thing! Waste is the problem and there is nothing more wasteful than fiat.
3. Toward Permissionless Power
Andrew Myers started his essay off by reminding us what Buckminster Fuller said all the way back in 1973:
''Our new economic basis wouldn’t be gold or dollars, it would be kilowatt hours.’’-Buckminster Fuller
Buckminster Fuller famously believed a global energy grid would radically change our economic system.
has a unique insight in this respect, because he’s not only a theoretician, but a practitioner. He’s been helping Bitcoin mining companies integrate into the electrical grid for some years now, which is fundamentally the basis for making Bucky Fuller’s vision a reality. This is a natural progression and one that no bureaucrat can slow down, despite how hard many of them appear to be trying.
4. On Entropy
Drew’s essay was a deep dive into the nature of the things we cannot escape in this universe. Time. Energy. Entropy.
Most people: Bitcoin is a monetary technology.
Bitcoin is poised to continue making revolutionary steps in the realm of energy, and push our civilization towards energy abundance.
5. Bitcoin. Energy. Human Ingenuity
This leads us to the essay by Gideon O Powell, the CEO of Cholla, who drew insights from the first man to merge money and economics: Julian Simon.
“Our supplies of natural resources are not finite in any economic sense. Nor does past experience give reason to expect natural resources to become more scarce.”
- Julian Simon
Energy abundance is something we can only achieve by recognizing some of the amazing tools we already have at our disposal today.
We’re already beginning to see the early signs of this, as we watch 2 of the most hated, but promising technologies in the world begin to merge.
We are talking about Bitcoin and nuclear energy.
6. Bitcoin & Nuclear
Brian Gitt contributed to this year’s edition by writing an article entitled: Bitcoin’s Power Problem And How To Solve It
Most people think nuclear plants are dangerous and potentially wasteful but Brian illustrates how they produce 300x less waste than solar plants, and are the second safest form of energy production on earth!
Predictions For 2024:
Price Appreciation. Who Knows. $150k ??
High fee environment. A new, competing L2 that’s not Lightning? Time for Liquid to shine?
Nostr Breakthrough. Perhaps not directly Bitcoin related, but there will probably be a break out product that uses Nostr, and internet native payments.
